International Colour Day 2024 event: Phyllis Shillito and her Colour Curriculum 1945-79When: 20 Mar 2024 5:30 PM, AEDT EVENT DETAILS:

We're proud to announce that our International Colour Day 2024 event will be a hybrid in-person and online event held jointly with Museums of History NSW and centred on the colour curriculum of pioneering Sydney-based colour and design educator Phyllis Shillito (1895-1980). In-person attendees at the Caroline Simpson Library (behind the Sydney Mint,10 Macquarie St, Sydney) will examine the impressive collection of student exercises and notes created by Eva Fay FDIA as a student at the Shillito Design School in the late 1970's, and donated in January this year to the Library, alongside earlier Shillito portfolios from the CSL and private collections. In addition, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, three presentations will establish the context of Shillito's teaching of colour, with some time for questions and comments from the live audience. Dr Catriona Quinn will examine the broader context of Phyllis Shillito’s impact on technical education and its relationship to the dynamic development of the Australian interior design profession. Jocelyn Maughan OAM, who studied colour directly under Shillito at East Sydney Technical College in the late 1950’s, will share her recollections of Shillito and give a critical assessment of Shillito’s approach to colour. And Dr David Briggs will discuss research he conducted jointly with Eva Fay that documented the direct influence of theorists Munsell, Ostwald, Maitland Graves, and especially H.B. Carpenter on Shillito's colour curriculum. Online attendees will be able to watch the three presentations and hear the discussion with the live audience via Zoom. Celebrating International Colour Day with ICA-Belgium On 17 March 2024, ICA-Belgium celebrates International Colour Day with an online event. Our guests are Ulrike Koch-Brinkmann, a German archaeologist, specialising in the colour reconstruction of ancient sculptures, and Stephen Westland, a British colour scientist and a professor of Colour Science and Technology in the School of Design at the University of Leeds.

Colour Group (GB) celebrating the International Colour Day 2024 Pigments, the usual suspects - or not? Newly discovered materials in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum This year the Colour Group (GB) will mark International Colour Day by returning to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Dr Lucia Burgio, will lead a tour around the museum, introducing the participants to the intriguing colour history of selected objects from the collection. Amongst those will be a Coromandel Screen and some late 16th-century portrait miniatures. Here are some examples.
Dr Lucia Burgio is Lead Conservation Scientist at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where she heads the Science laboratory and guides the scientific analysis of museum objects. She assists the Museum’s curators and conservators in the examination and understanding of the collections, providing information on materials and techniques, methods of construction, date and provenance. She has published extensively on her special interests (historical pigments, and American and Asian lacquer).
Portuguese Color Association (APCor) ICD 2024 The Portuguese Color Association (APCor), in partnership with Arte Central and Magjacol, celebrates International Color Day (March 21), as a way of promoting color literacy within the community. The 1st edition of the National Color Meeting (March 23) will be a unique opportunity to bring together professionals in the most diverse areas (e.g., design, painting, architecture, photography, construction, personal image, psychology, education), disseminating knowledge to everyone. The date has been celebrated by APCor since 2008 and in 2024 color will be celebrated through a one-day in-person meeting, in which the public can participate in lectures and workshops related to color. The meeting will also function as a training event for teachers, with the support of the ATEXXI Training Center for its formal accreditation. Children will also be able to participate through intervention on a collaborative panel, in a continuous activity throughout the day. Swedish Colour Centre Foundation is happy to be able to introduce you to an artist whose work with colours are truly unique and inspiring. Sophie Smallhorn will share her passion for colour and its endless possibilities, and how the approach and application can differ from one project to the next. Enjoy! Based in London, Sophie Smallhorn works as both an artist and consultant. Sophie Smallhorn’s work explores the relationship between colour, volume and proportion. Simple geometry, negative space and a use of flat saturated palettes are key elements to her compositions. Her intuitive and playful use of colour is applied to both larger scale architectural projects and smaller, wall-based pieces. Her work is exhibited internationally, commissioned by both private and corporate clients and included in collections around the world.
